Chelsea have stepped up their interest to sign Arsenal target and Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix.
With his game time cut significantly under Diego Simeone, you can understand Joao Felix’s growing frustration and eagerness to find a club. Furthermore, given his immense talent, you can also understand Chelsea’s thought process behind wanting to sign him.
Chelsea have been absolutely lacklustre in attack so far this season. Quite frankly, their new signings and older players have not been doing enough in the final third to push the club in the right direction.
Therefore, signing a new attacker seems to be the position of priority in the January transfer window for Graham Potter.
According to a new report from the Telegraph, Chelsea want to sign Joao Felix in January on an initial loan deal – this loan is likely to have an option or obligation to buy when it expires. The report also claims that a centre-back is also high on Potter’s wish list.
The good news about this is, Joao Felix is perfect for Chelsea. He is still young, so would not add to their ageing squad. Furthermore, he is also versatile which means Potter has the freedom to move his attack around as he seeks a winning formula.
Chelsea sit in 9th place. They are without a win in their last five league games. Therefore, you can understand the alarm bells ringing in Potter’s ears.
He has managed for long enough to recognise a position of need and the attack is their main one. They have scored only 17 goals – the same amount as they have conceded. This is nowhere near good enough for a team who had aspirations of finishing in the top four, or even challenging for a title going into the season. As the campaign progresses, these aspirations are looking less and less likely – the Blues can essentially kiss goodbye to finishing top as they are already 19 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
