Manchester United keen to replace David de Gea with this free signing

Manchester United will soon be in the market to replace David de Gea.
Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea sees his contract at Old Trafford run out at the end of this season. Although the Spain international has been a loyal servant to the Red Devils, Erik ten Hag is yet to extend his contract, despite this being an option to the club. When you partner this with his inconsistency, it does not look good for David de Gea.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester United are keen to bring in Yann Sommer, currently playing for Borussia Monchengladbach, when his current deal expires next season.
Sommer played three games for Switzerland in the World Cup before being eliminated. He played well in the opening two games, where he conceded just once. However, things looked bleak for the experienced goalkeeper as he conceded six goals against Portugal to see them exited from the prestigious competition.
The Top Flight verdict – this is bad business from Manchester United
Yann Sommer is 33 years old. While this is by no means old as far as goalkeepers are concerned, this does feel like a cop out.
Manchester United of 10 years ago would not make such a purchase. They would be prepared to either spend a little over the odds to secure talent, or they would and search the market some more before essentially panic buying.
Many people will remark with the fact that free transfers means risk free transfers but I would argue this is far from true. Even free transfers use resources such as wage and space in the squad. With this, you would much rather sign a player who will benefit the club in the long-run, not simply another stop-gap signing.
Unfortunately, it is something we’ve seen too much of from Manchester United in the transfer window. If this news is true, the United recruitment team need to take a long and hard think for Sommer is not what the club needs right now.
Who do you think Manchester United will sign in January?
