KNOCKOUT STAGES
Sat 3 Nov – Romero plays full match as Argentina goes through to quarter finals
Romero has been one of the solid players for Argentina this tournament and he will be rewarded, as now the Tottenham defender will face the Netherlands in the quarter finals of this competition.
GROUP STAGES
Fri 2 Nov – Son gets assist as South Korea goes through to knockout stages
It was an emotional day for Son as he grabbed an assist and was the best player on the pitch to send his country through to the knockout stages.
Fri 2 Nov – Bentancur subbed off injured as Uruguay gets knocked out
Bentancur was subbed off midway through the first half due to injury. It is not yet known the full extent of his injury but the good news for Spurs fans is that he has a couple of weeks to recover before the Premier League kicks off again.
Fri 2 Nov – Richarlison rested as Brazil goes through to knockout stages
Brazil had already secured their place in the knockout stages of the competition, meaning they treated this game as a training match. Richarlison was rested.
Thu 1 Nov – Ivan Perisic plays full match as Croatia goes through to knockout stages
It was a boring 0-0 draw for Croatia as they held out for a draw against Belgium, meaning Perisic was not involved from an attacking perspective. Still, he will take it as the one point was enough for Croatia to secure their place in the knockout stages of the competition.
Wed 30 Nov – Hugo Lloris unused as France goes through to knockout stages
France will play in the knockout stages of this competition, but Hugo Lloris did not have an input on the game on Wednesday. He was an unused sub for the entirety of this match.
Wed 30 Nov – Hojbjerg is coming back to North London
Everybody hyped up Denmark going into this tournament but let’s not beat around the bush – they were woeful. One of the worst teams in the tournament and now Tottenham star man Hojbjerg is coming back to Tottenham to focus on the season ahead.
Wed 30 Nov – Romero plays full match for Argentina
Christian Romero joins the list of Tottenham players who have progressed to the knockout stages. It was an impressive 2-0 win and this clean sheet will mean the most to him.
Tue 29 Nov – Kane assists & Dier unused for England, Davies plays 59 minutes for Wales
Harry Kane and Eric Dier will be going through to the knockout stages of the World Cup after beating Ben Davies’ (who played terribly) Wales. Harry Kane got the assist for Phil Foden, whereas Eric Dier was an unused sub.
Tue 29 Nov – Sarr unused for Senegal
Senegal secured their place in the knockout stages of the competition, meaning Tottenham young lad Sarr will face England on Sunday in the hope of game time.
Mon 28 Nov – Bentancur plays full match for Uruguay
It has been an underwhelming tournament so far for Uruguay. They need a win against Ghana and for other results to go their way, otherwise they will be out of the competition. Bentancur has been one of their more impressive players though and he was excellent again versus Portugal despite the loss.
Mon 28 Nov – Richarlison plays 73 minutes for Brazil
Brazil solidified their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Richarlison played 73 minutes before being subbed off in their 1-0 win over Switzerland on Monday.
Mon 28 Nov – Son plays full game for South Korea
Unless results go their way, it looks like South Korea will be exitting the competition early. They have just one point in two games after losing to Ghana today. Son played the whole game but got no goal returns and, in all honesty, did not play great either.
Sun 27 Nov – Ivan Perisic bags two assists for Croatia
Tottenham man Perisic is known for performing on the international stage and he did just that on Sunday. Croatia completed a 4-1 comeback, massively helped by Perisic’s two assists. The Croatia international played 86 minutes in total.
Sat 26 Nov – Romero comes off the bench for 21 minutes for Argentina
Romero was called upon to keep the peace in Argentina’s defence as he needed to hold the all-important lead. He did so well, keeping a clean sheet for Argentina in his 21 minute cameo, giving them the chance to qualify for the group stage.
Sat 26 Nov – Hojbjerg and Lloris face off in Denmark vs France
Both Hojbjerg and Lloris played the full match for their countries as France came out on top. Lloris has now qualified for the group stage with France, whereas Hojbjerg and Denmark must beat Australia to qualify.
Fri 25 Nov – Harry Kane plays match, Eric Dier unused for England
Harry Kane captained England yet again and played the full match this time. However, he looked lethargic and hardly made an attacking input. Eric Dier was unused during England’s 0-0 draw with USA.
Fri 25 Nov – Pape Sarr given 12 minutes for Senegal
Tottenham boy Sarr was brought in for the final 12 minutes for Senegal.
Fri 25 Nov – Ben Davies plays 90 minutes for Wales
Wales are likely to be knocked out of the competition as they now on the fringe of group B. Ben Davies played the full match and did not play bad, but he will be disappointed to lose to Iran late on.
Thu 24 Nov – Richarlison scores two goals including overhead kick
Richarlison started and scored the two goals for Brazil which saw them over the line against Serbia. This featured a terrific overhead kick which is a contender for goal of the tournament already.
Thu 24 Nov – Son and Bentancur face off in South Korea vs Uruguay
It was a goalless draw as the points were shared between South Korea and Uruguay, with Tottenham stars Son Heung-Min and Rodrigo Bentancur facing off in the group stage match. Both players played the full ninety, with Bentancur picking up a man of the match performance.
Thu 24 Nov – Harry Kane faces an injury doubt for tomorrow’s match against USA
The Top Flight reported this morning that Harry Kane could miss out on USA after still feeling a knock from the match against Iran. Gareth Southgate is expected to make a last-minute decision. For more information, click below.
Wed 23 Nov – Perisic not at his best for Croatia
Fans expect big things from Croatia this tournament but they did not live up to expectations. Ivan Perisic played an unmotivated 90 minutes before being subbed off in added time
Tue 22 Nov – Hugo Lloris plays well and captains France against Australia
Hugo Lloris captained France to a comfortable 4-1 win. He could have done better for the goal admittedly, but it meant nothing in the end. Overall, a good display from Lloris.
Tue 22 Nov – Hojbjerg has quiet game for Denmark, plays full 90 minutes
Hojbjerg kicked off his World Cup campaign not in the manner he would have liked, drawing 0-0 with Tunisia. He had moments of class but overall, a quiet game from the midfielder.
Tue 22 Nov – Romero subbed off after disappointing defensive display
Argentina did not play well against Saudi Arabia as they fell short. Romero conceded two goals in quick concession before the defender was rightly subbed off. He will look to improve in the next match.
Mon 21 Nov – Ben Davies plays well at centre-back for Wales
Wales played a back three against USA, Ben Davies played the entire 90 minutes and despite conceding a goal, looked good for his country. A 1-1 draw to kick off the group stage in a hotly contested group for Wales.
Mon 21 Nov – Pape Sarr unused for Senegal
Pape Sarr was on the bench for the entirety of Senegal’s 2-0 loss to Netherlands.
Mon 21 Nov – Harry Kane gets two assists while Eric Dier comes off the bench
Harry Kane played an important 75 minutes for England, picking up two assists and captaining his side to a landmark opening win. Eric Dier also featured from the bench, playing well as he almost scored himself.
