Where Is Ronaldo Coming up Short?
TL;DR Pace, Minutes and Match Fitness

As Erik ten Hag pointed out in his first game against Brighton, Ronaldo did not have the form. fitness and continuity after missing preseason. The Dutchman’s decision to leave Ronaldo (maybe to the chagrin of CR7) came despite the absence of Anthony Martial who is yet to feature in the regular season through injury after sparkling in the preseason under Ten Hag.

His only start so far this season came in the cataclysmic 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford. Ronaldo is yet to score in the Premier League this season as well. In six games so far this season, the former Real Madrid legend has played only 212 minutes of football.

But it can be argued that 212 minutes for a single league goal is a drought when Cristiano Ronaldo is in the conversation. The 37-year-old who has lost a yard of pace has found it tough getting his teeth into Ten Hag’s pace-driven, pressing system.

Subsequently, Ronaldo needs some time to get into his groove and ingrained in the tactical philosophy of Erik ten Hag.
