It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Chelsea and manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Blues have just come off yet another defeat on the road, this time against Southampton, with many questioning the German manager and his constant selection of players who haven’t been able to live up to expectations.

The Blues were convincingly beaten 2-1 as goals from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong canceled out an opener from Raheem Sterling.

But the Chelsea manager was not making any excuses;

"It does not take a lot to beat us. This is what I do not like.We struggle with our focus and consistency in matches. When things go against us, we struggle to find answers and our way back.Just toughen up as a team and show a different mentality."

This is the Blues’ second loss in three games as they were dominated by Jesse Marsch’s Leeds side in their trip to Elland Road. The absence of Reece James, N’Golo Kante, and a recognized center forward were felt on a night to forget for the visitors.

This was the Saints’ first win over them since March 2013 and they were good value for it as well. Disjointed in midfield and blunted in attack, this was a night that called into question Thomas Tuchel’s decision to utilize a system that does not seem to suit the players at his disposal.

What Can Thomas Tuchel Do to Fix This Run of Form?

Co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali were both in attendance at St. Mary’s for the game, which might prove to be helpful after all. Deadline day has arrived and by the looks of it, the London club really needs to get active in the transfer market.

Tuchel’s success in West London has been founded on defensive resilience. The German manager managed to accumulate 31 clean sheets in his first 50 games as the coach. So far, they have conceded 8 goals, which is something Tuchel has to look at.

They have gone on and signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella from Napoli and Brighton, respectively. They have also recently confirmed the signing of Wesley Fofana from Leicester City for a fee estimated to be around £75million.

Chelsea Still Needs Work Done Before the Window Closes

Chelsea are in talks with RB Leipzig over the signing of Josko Gvardiol, with the fee estimated to be around £77million. They looked extremely weak in midfield against the Saints and have to look at options to provide competition for N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mateo Kovacic.

Finally, the club is in desperate need of an established center forward to lead the line as the false-nine system clearly isn’t working. Tuchel denied any rumors linking Cristiano Ronaldo to joining them at Stamford Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku joined the club last summer and has since gone back on loan to Inter Milan. The decision to sell Tammy Abraham to Roma has clearly not gone down well with supporters as the English forward has since helped Roma win the inaugural UEFA Conference League.

Only time will tell as to how the season goes for Thomas Tuchel and his players. Todd Boehly certainly seems determined to provide the manager with the investment he needs amidst a poor start to the season.
