Aston Villa’s midfielder Douglas Luiz has been a trending name for the last 48 hours. Not only has he been the subject of a Villa Park exit but he was also the only other player to get on the scoresheet for Villa against Arsenal.

Villa endured their third Premier League loss in five games played and has only accumulated three wins in their last 16 EPL outings. They sit in 19th place after they went down 2-1 to the Gunners at the Emirates. It doesn’t get any easier for them with Manchester City coming up next.

The only positive to come from their travels to the Emirates was Douglas Luiz’s direct goal from a corner, for the second time this season. Certainly becoming a trademark for the midfielder. This was exactly why the club have come out and touched on the rumours linking the player with an exit from Birmingham.

He is in the final year of his current deal with them and the options are to either risk losing him for free at the end of the season if he doesn’t extend or, sell now and lose another first-team option just before the transfer window closes.

Douglas Luiz Linked With Multiple Clubs

Before the manager’s words on wanting to keep Luiz at Villa Park, the club was said to be open to the right offer, with the player also in favour of a change of scenery.

This was soon after La Liga side Atletico Madrid and Premier League club Liverpool were said to submit a bid of £20m for the player who was struggling to make the starting XI under Gerrard. The club will also look to ask for more than the £20m offered by both European powerhouses.

Now the club has taken a complete U-turn on the situation and wants to now tie him down long-term, also in a bid to fend off interest from other parties around the Premier League and in Europe.

The Aston Villa Boss on Douglas Luiz:

"I am not in control of Douglas Luiz situation. We are not in a position where we need to lose our top players — but at the same time he has a year to go. Douglas Luiz, one to watch until the end of the Deadline Day."

Little motivation for Villa fans with it setting up to be a hectic day for Aston Villa on the final day of the summer window. They must try to keep hold of their top-quality players while trying to end their search for a centre-back replacement for Diego Carlos.
