Thirteen Premier League clubs entered the EFL Cup in the second round but only 12 will progress to the next round and join up with the top of the table who bye through into the next round, the third round.

Of the 25 Carabao Cup clashes to take place over this week, no top-flight club played each other, which posed a major advantage to all of them taking part in round two of the competition. However, all but one top-flight team took advantage of their opponents and progressed to the next phase.

The side out and must now wait for the FA Cup and enjoy concentrating on their league campaign is Fulham. Marco Silva’s men were second best to League Two outfit, Crawley Town.

Premier League Clubs EFL Cup Round 2 Results:

  13. Forest Green Rovers 0-3 Brighton

Of the other clubs who won, Bournemouth and Leicester City made a meal of it. They were only two sides from the top flight to go to penalties. Thankfully, they made it through their respective shootouts.

The Foxes’ poor form from the Premier League has carried over into their cup showing. If they do not act the in the transfer market with urgency, they could be in for a very disappointing season.

Aston Villa, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Wolves all won convincingly by two or more goals, while Everton displayed an efficient display to win their outing 1-0, keeping their first clean sheet of the season.

Leeds United also painted the town, white, when they put in a dominant shift in the Yorkshire Derby clash with Barnsley to win 3-1. Bragging rights to the Whites!

Strangely enough: none of the Premier League players made the shortlist for the player of the round for round two. The players who have been nominated are, Dennis Adeniran from Sheffield Wednesday, Teddy Bishop from Lincoln City, Andy Cook of Bradford City, and Sam Nombe from Exeter City.

Newcastle also struggled to get the win over the line against Tranmere Rovers but thanks to Chris Wood’s 52nd-minute strike, they will able to grab the victory.

The last 32 teams in the Carabao Cup will have seven fixtures with Premier League clubs going head-to-head. Last season’s EFL Cup winners open their tournament against the League One side, Derby County.

The biggest clash to look out for has to be Chelsea’s travel to the Etihad. It will be the first taste of Pep Guardiola going up against Thomas Tuchel.

Who do you think will make it through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and what match are you most excited for in the next round?
