It would be one of the most surprising transfers of the summer so far but Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic has been linked with a swap deal for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.
The Daily Mail has reported that:
"Chelsea have made a shock enquiry about Harry Maguire’s availability amid growing doubt over the central defender’s future at Manchester United. The England international – who is sweating on his place in United’s team for Monday’s crunch clash against Liverpool – is of interest to the Stamford Bridge club as they toil to complete a deal for Leicester’s Wesley Fofana. And Sportsmail has learned that Chelsea have raised the possibility of taking Maguire to west London as part of United’s attempts to sign Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic."
Is Manchester United a good option for Pulisic?
Christian Pulisic needs more game time and a move to Man United would mean he stays in the Premier League. However, they cannot offer Champions League football at the moment.
Pulisic is also the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and AC Milan, who can offer to play in European football’s premier competition. This would be tempting for Pulisic who was previously in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and the player may want to experience life in another country.
But a move to be a part of ten Hag’s rebuild at Old Trafford may be tempting as well, despite how much of a challenge it looks at the moment.
Pulisic is a star for the USA who will meet England at the World Cup this November. He must make sure he finds a club where he can play regularly, so he is in the best form possible, heading into the tournament.
Would Chelsea move suit, Maguire?
Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the season with losses to Brighton and Brentford. It does not get any easier for them as they face Liverpool on Monday night in a fixture that Jurgen Klopp’s side will be licking their lips at.
Maguire arrived at Old Trafford in a difficult period for the club and despite captaining the side he does not have the best relationship with their supporters.
Nevertheless, he has still continued to play well for England, largely due to having Declan Rice and Kalvin Philips in front of him, instead of Scott McTominay and Fred. A move to Chelsea would see him have N’Golo Kanté and Jorginho in his midfield, which would provide much better protection than what he currently has at United.
If Maguire’s place in Eric ten Hag’s side is in doubt with the World Cup just a few months away, Maguire must make sure he has sufficient game time to make sure he keeps his starting place in Gareth Southgate’s side.
Maguire has also spent his entire career so far in the North of England. Along with United, he has played for Sheffield United, Hull City, Wigan Athletic, and Leicester. A move to London would be exciting for the player.
He is also yet to win a major trophy having come closest with a runner-up medal in the 2021 Europa League. It would be expected that he would win trophies if he moves to Stamford Bridge.
