Delle Alli has been linked with a move to Turkish club Besiktas and what a shame it will be if the player who is just 26 leaves the Premier League for the Süper Lig.
According to the Mirror:
"Besiktas want to sign Dele Alli on loan from Everton. The Turkish giants are proposing the temporary move with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the seasonThe switch will enable Alli to get the regular first-team action the 26-year-old has been unable to gain since joining the Toffees in the January transfer window.Designed to get his career back on track, the deal was structured in a way that would have seen Everton potentially pay his parent club Spurs £40million once he’d reached a certain number of games. But Alli was unable to break into the Toffees team as a regular starter and began this season on the bench for the games against Chelsea and Aston Villa."
When did it go wrong for Alli?
Dele Alli was one of the brightest English talents since he made his debut for MK Dons at the age of just 16. He went on to play 88 times for the club, scoring 24 goals before joining Tottenham Hotspur.
His time at Tottenham was very fruitful under Mauricio Pochettino. However, when the Argentine was sacked in November 2019 things started to go wrong for Alli. Jose Mourinho took over and although he ended the season with nine goals and four assists in 25 Premier League appearances, it was nowhere near the standards he had set in 2016/17 where Alli scored 18 goals and collected 9 assists.
Alli only played 15 times in the league during the 2020/21 season and after making 10 appearances in 2021/22, Antonio Conte sold him to Everton. He has so far made 13 appearances in total for the Toffees, without scoring or making an assist.
Is a move to Besiktas the right one?
It would be such a shame to see a player so young who once lit up the Premier League depart for Turkey. Under Frank Lampard at Everton, you would have hoped that he might be able to get his old form back. However, so far this has not come to fruition.
This season is still in its early stages and it appears Alli would be giving up too soon if he makes the move to Besiktas. He was once an England regular who was an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s side at the 2018 World Cup. But Alli has not played for the Three Lions since 2019.
It would be unlikely to see him make Southgate’s team for Qatar unless he goes on a phenomenal run between now and November. Although we have not seen Alli at his best for a few years now.
It would be great if Alli could put in the impressive performances that he used to in a Spurs shirt for Everton but a loan move to Besiktas may be the spark that gets him back to his old best if it is just a loan move.
However, it would be bad timing with the World Cup coming up and the player needs to stick it out at Everton for a while longer.
