Aston Villa got off the mark this weekend in the Premier League when they beat Everton at Villa Park 2-1. Sadly, the three points were met with devastating news when their most expensive summer signing, Diego Carlos, picked up an injury.

Steven Gerrard’s men collected their first three points of the season after getting off to a miserable start against newly-promoted Bournemouth 2-0 on Matchday 1. Then came the next outing against the Toffees, with Frank Lampard’s men also losing their opener against Chelsea.

The game was packed with end-to-end action and thanks to goals from Danny Ings in the first half and Emi Buendia in the second half, Aston Villa has now moved up seven spots from last week’s 16th place to this weekend’s ninth-placed team.

Just before the game concluded, Villa suffered a loss almost equivalent to the loss of three points on the opening day of the EPL, they lost Diego Carlos to a ruptured Achilles tendon injury. This will, unfortunately, see the defender sidelined for at least six months, with surgery being the next step in his road to recovery for him.

"Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos is expected to be out for a minimum of six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon. The centre-back picked up the injury in Villa’s 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday lunchtime and is set to undergo surgery, in an early blow to Steven Gerrard’s season."

Diego Carlos Was Aston Villa’s Most Expensive Summer Addition

Carlos was one of the first summer additions this transfer window and was the club’s most expensive buy, paying a reported £26m to Sevilla to complete the deal. He started both games for them, alongside different partners.

Without him available for selection, the club is left with three centre-back options in Tyron Mings, Ezri Konsa, and Callum Chambers. Due to Villa travelling light at the back, the manager admitted that they could be forced to do some more work in the market and look for a short-term or long-term option.

Steven Gerrard on the Situation

"While the window is still open, you can never rule it out [signing a replacement].We will have to wait and see what the outcome is of Diego Carlos’ injury and why he’s gone off the pitch because I am extremely worried about that situation.(Via: skysport.com)"

Players Being Linked With a Move to Aston Villa

So far there have been no concrete links to a specific player, only rumours. The names making their rounds are;

Victor Nelsson, the Constent Link

One of the names linked to the Birmingham club quite frequently. He will certainly be an option for Aston Villa going into the closing stages of the transfer window.

Leicester City Men, Caglar Soyuncu and Jannik Vestergaard

The pair of City defenders are good targets to consider and are also two names popping up on a number of outlets as possible candidates. Caglar Soyuncu is in the final year of his current deal and Vestergaard will come cheap.

Both have also fallen out of favour at the King Power, so it could be a deal that suits all parties.

Nico Elvedi and Evan Ndicka: The Bundesliga Boys

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Elvedi and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Ndicka are two names outside of the Premier League that are being named because of the situations at their respective clubs. Contracts are running down and regular game time is what is being sought after by both players.

Liverpool’s Nat Phillips

Having not made his loan move to Bournemouth permanent, Philipps is fifth choice to, van Dijk, Matip, Konate, and Gomez, and he could be looking to make a move away from Anfield, on loan or permanent.

Liverpool have changed their tune regarding the defender. They were ready to listen to offers that meet their £16m evaluation of him, but then later said he’s not for sale. He would also be a good option to consider after his run with the Cherries in the Championship last season and Stevie could use his links with the Anfield club to help see a deal through.

It remains interesting to see who the Villians go with. A player outside of England or a player Premier League ready?
