The president of Brazilian club Corinthians has expressed his desire to bring Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo to the club.

The Sun has quoted Duilio Monteiro Alves of Corinthians speaking to Ulissescast saying:

"It is true that I want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. I have big dreams, this is Corinthians, for f***’s sake! We’ve got Willian! We’ve got Renato Augusto! With everything that happens in football, I feel obliged to try for whatever is best for Corinthians.I don’t know whether we will be able to get him. We haven’t yet made an approach or sounded him out.But we are keeping an eye on him. Maybe he will want to come and play in Brazil. I don’t see why not."

The move would be a surprising one and would not match Ronaldo’s ambitions of playing in the Champions League to make sure he stays ahead of Lionel Messi in the goals tally. He currently has 140 goals in the competition, which is 15 more than Messi.

What would Corinthians offer Ronaldo?

Whilst they can’t offer to play in the Champions League they do compete in the Copa Libertadores, which is South America’s version of the competition.

Ronaldo is obsessed with records so if Messi is to go back to his old club Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina and they qualify for the Libertadores then he may be interested in scoring more goals than him in the competition.

However, the Corinthians are in a battle to stay in the Libertadores as they are currently 2-0 down to fellow Brazilian side Flamengo in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

Whether they stay in the competition or not could play a part in whether they get Ronaldo as recently Luis Suarez turned down a move to River Plate, after they were knocked out of the Libertadores by Velez Sarsfield.

Suarez eventually joined the Uruguayan side Nacional, which shows how South America can attract top players.

As for teammates at Corinthians, he would have former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho and ex-Chelsea and Arsenal winger Willian.

Will the Move Happen for the Manchester United Wantaway?

It is hard to see this move coming into fruition but stranger things have happened in the transfer window.

Ronaldo’s behaviour at Manchester United has not been great with him recently leaving early from their friendly against Rayo Vallecano. He is also running out of options as to where to go, so a move to Corinthians might be his best bet.

The Portuguese forward still scored 18 goals in 30 Premier League games last season so imagine what he could do in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. He may be unhappy at United but surely a player of his quality would favour playing in England over Brazil.

His position is still up in the air and Eric ten Hag’s side’s season starts on Sunday as they face Brighton at Old Trafford.

The transfer window closes on the 1st of September so there is still a long time to go and we cannot expect Ronaldo’s transfer saga to be resolved any time soon.
