Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, who has one year left on his contract, is attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea
"According to 90min:“A number of clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United are monitoring Jamie Vardy’s situation at Leicester City. Vardy’s current deal is due to expire next year and new talks are yet to take place.”"
Vardy has had a remarkable career so far rising from non-league football all the way to winning the Premier League. He was released from Sheffield United’s academy at 16 and moved to Stocksbridge Park Steels and then Halifax Town.
He then signed for Fleetwood Town and scored 31 goals and created 17 assists in the National League for them. This form got him a transfer to Leicester who was in the Championship at the time.
Vardy gained promotion with the club winning the Championship in 2014. They then miraculously won the Premier League in 2016.
He is the only player to have played in all levels of the FA Cup from the qualifiers all the way to the final which he won with Leicester in 2021.
Is it time for Jamie Vardy to leave Leicester?
Having been at Leicester since 2012 he is a club legend. In total Vardy has scored 164 goals in 385 appearances for the club.
Some of Leicester’s star players including N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez have moved on to Chelsea and Manchester City respectively. After winning the league Vardy was linked with a move to Arsenal but ultimately stayed at Leicester.
It would feel like the end of an era for the club if he was to leave especially with Kasper Schmeichel looking likely to sign for Nice.
Brendan Rodgers’ side is enduring a difficult transfer window with no new signings, as well as many other names including James Maddison, Wesley Fofana, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans potentially moving away.
With how the Foxes are going at the moment it may be the right time for Vardy to leave the club as they may end the transfer window with a worse squad and would do well to finish above the 8th place the club managed last season.
Would Manchester United or Chelsea be a good fit?
Both Manchester United and Chelsea are in need of a striker. United have a sulking Cristiano Ronaldo who wants out at the club while the Blues are still looking for a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
Vardy is 35 now and still scored 15 goals in 25 appearances in the Premier League last season so would be a good short-term fit for both clubs.
His experience and his high-pressing work rate would be an asset for both clubs. Vardy would suit the style of play of both Eric ten Hag and Thomas Tuchel.
A move to Stamford Bridge would see him reunited with Kante and Ben Chilwell. Whilst the Red Devils have some promising young forwards in Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho who could learn a lot from Vardy.
He has also never played for a so-called ‘big six team’ so a move to either club may be a perfect way to end his time playing at the highest level in England.
