Brentford to replace Christian Eriksen with Mikkel Damsgaard
Christian Eriksen ultimately chose a move to Manchester United instead of staying with Brentford. However, the Bees are looking at fellow Dane Mikel Damsgaard to replace him.
Sky Sports has reported that:
“Brentford have made an offer in the region of £16.7m for Sampdoria’s Mikkel Damsgaard. Brentford are not the only club from the Premier League interested in Damsgaard however.
“Sky in Italy, Gianluca Di Marzio, is reporting that Sampdoria are inclined to accept the bid. They have not yet done so yet and Brentford are still waiting to hear the outcome of their offer.”
It will be a tough ask for Damsgaard to replace Eriksen who during his spell in West London last season scored one goal and made four assists in 11 appearances. Damsgaard is a similar player to Eriksen but more of a left winger than an attacking midfielder although he can play in both roles and in central midfield.
Mikkel Damsgaard has Impressed on International Duty
England fans will remember Damsgaard from the Euro 2020 when he scored from a free kick in Denmark’s semi-final defeat to the Three Lions.
He also scored against Russia during that tournament and starred in the absence of Christian Eriksen who suffered a cardiac arrest. It could be time for him to come in for Eriksen again at Brentford.
In total Damsgaard has 15 caps for his country with four goals and seven assists. Damsgaard started his career in his homeland with Nordsjælland where he made 93 appearances scoring 13 times and making 21 assists.
Damsgaard’s Club Career so Far
This form got him a move to Serie A with Sampdoria in 2020. He had a solid start in his first season in Italy making 35 appearances in the league. However, due to injury, he played just 11 times in the division last season.
Sampdoria finished 15th in the Italian league last season surviving relegation by just six points. Brentford finished 13th which was 11 points above the drop zone. So it would be a step up for Damsgaard to move to England with Brentford.
He has already starred for his country at a major tournament before and will be looking to do the same at the Qatar World Cup later this year. Denmark is in a group with France, Australia and Tunisia. Playing in the Premier League would no doubt prepare him for competing against the World’s best at the tournament in November.
How would he settle in at Brentford?
Damsgaard is just 22 years of age and a move to Brentford would be a challenge for him but he would be joining fellow Danes as the club already have quite a few on their books in Christian Nørgaard, Mathias Jensen, Kristoffer Ajer, Mads Bech Sørensen, Mads Roerslev and Luka Racic.
He would also be put under the guidance of fellow countryman Thomas Frank so it should not take long for him to settle at Brentford.
The fans have seen what Damsgaard can do at the Euros last year so expectations will be high if Brentford can get the signing over the line. The move makes sense for the player and it would be exciting to see such a young talent in the Premier League.
