Frank Lampard wants Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour at Everton
Billy Gilmour is a young talent who needs playing time and after not being given a squad number at Chelsea, needs to move on to make sure he finds a place where he can develop.
According to 90min “Everton boss Frank Lampard is also understood to be a great admirer of Scottish midfield talent Billy Gilmour, with sources confirming the Toffees remain in talks over the 21-year-old.”
Lampard is known for giving young players a chance he gave opportunities to Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Reece James whilst at Chelsea. A move to Everton could be the perfect move for Gilmour at this stage in his career.
What will Billy Gilmour Offer Everton?
Lampard knows Gilmour from Chelsea and was also the manager who gave him his first team debut. The player has gone on to make 22 appearances for the West London side. He can play in central midfield as well as a deep-lying role.
He spent an unsuccessful stint on loan at Norwich last season where he made 28 appearances for the side as they were relegated back to the Championship.
The Scotsman also played for both Rangers and Celtic’s academies before moving to Chelsea. He is one of Scotland’s brightest young talents and starred for them as they drew 0-0 with England in the Euros last summer.
Gilmour has 15 caps for his country. Unfortunately, Scotland lost to Ukraine in the World Cup playoffs so will not be going to Qatar later this year. If Steve Clarke’s side is going to make it to another major tournament then Gilmour will likely be key to this.
Who else are Everton targeting?
Lampard is looking to raid his former side with 90min adding that “Everton are in advanced talks to bring Ross Barkley back to Goodison Park” and “are also in talks to sign Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi.”
Barkley would be an emotional transfer as he is a local lad from Liverpool who made 179 appearances for the Toffees before moving to Chelsea. This move has not gone to plan as he was sent on loan to Aston Villa and made just six appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the Premier League last season.
Batshuayi is another player who has failed to make the grade at Stamford Bridge. He has 25 goals in 75 appearances for the club but has sent a considerable amount of time out on loan since joining the club in 2016. His loans have included spells at Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Crystal Palace twice and last season at Besiktas.
Everton have already signed Dwight McNeil, Ruben Vinagre and James Tarkowski this window although they have lost Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur. The addition of these three players from Chelsea will improve Lampard’s squad as he looks to help them finish much higher in the league than the disappointing 16th place of last season.
Gilmour, Barkley and Batshuayi are all players with a point to prove and joining a club like Everton under Lampard could be a perfect fit for them all. They begin their Premier League campaign against Chelsea next Saturday so negotiations may be tricky with this fixture looming.
