Chelsea striker emerges as shock striker target

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe’s search for a new striker has been well documented. Supposed targets have included Everton’s Dominic Calvert Lewin, Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad and the previously mentioned Hugo Ekitike.

Howe’s current representatives in the position are January signing Chris Wood, Callum Wilson, whom Howe has a prior connection with, and youngster Santiago Muńoz, who also arrived on the turn of the year.

While the former are viable candidates considering their wealth of Premier League experience, Wilson’s injury record partnered with Wood’s mediocre goal output of late exhibit the need for new blood.

In the past few hours, a surprising name has been added to Newcastle’s list. Bild journalist Christian Falk stated via Twitter that the club are interested in Chelsea’s Timo Werner.

Newcastle United to ignite Timo Werner’s career?

Putting two and two together, the Magpies being interested in Werner makes sense. Tuchel is keen to refresh his squad in terms of outgoings as well as incomings and the Germany international has been included in the names listed.

Werner has struggled to provide a consistent source of goals since making the switch from the Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and has in effect seen the prominence of his role oscillate.

During the campaign prior to signing for Chelsea, the 26-year-old notched 28 goals at a rate of 1.16 goal involvements per 90 minutes in the German top-flight. In the two seasons succeeding the move, he recorded a total of ten goals and nine assists in 56 matches at a ratio of 0.44 goal involvements per game.

Falk didn’t digress regarding the news of Newcastle United’s supposed interest in Werner and the form of the deal (loan or transfer) is unclear at this point.
