Five Premier League Players with The Biggest Point to Prove Next Season
Sterling’s Tank Empty or Not?
Raheem Sterling has echoed to the public he wanted a change and a fresh challenge to ensure he is on England’s trip to Qatar. Chelsea’s manager Thomas Tuchel heard his cry and answered his call immediately, knowing the forward was his top attacking priority due to the flopped return of Lukaku last season.
Tuchel has been in touch with a variety of new players, but no second attacker is imminent. Therefore, the focus will be on Sterling settling in, starting with preseason in the United States.
Many Manchester City fans are sad to see him join Chelsea, a bitter rival, but perhaps one or two are guilty of under-appreciating Sterling’s contribution. Sterling’s £47.5 million move saw him joining the likes of George Weah, Nicolas Anelka, Wayne Bridge, and Frank Lampard, a few notable players to play for both clubs.
Sterling’s frustration escalated last season after he only got 23 starts in the Premier League. Despite being intermittently used, he scored 13 goals and provided five assists; that’s 2 more than Chelsea’s top scorer Mason Mount, who played 32 games. Surprisingly, too, Sterling had more touches in the opposition box (8.93) per 90 minutes than any of Chelsea’s forwards.
Raheem Wants to Add More Trophies to His Name
He joined City in 2015, and since then he has won 10 major trophies, including his fourth Premier League title under Pep Guardiola last season. During his tenor at the Etihad, he scored 78 goals in 161 appearances. Only Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane have a better return in that same period as Sterling.
Tuchel has guaranteed Sterling first-team football based on his plans and his amazing numbers. He will be given the choice to get into the box and roam the flanks. The Englishman will be deployed either as a number 10 or a wide forward or as a false 9. His versatility makes him an asset since he fits neatly into Tuchel’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, as well as into a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3.
Raheem Sterling doesn’t quite fit the status of legendary players like Sergio Aguero or Ronaldo, but his combined goals and assists, specifically under Guardiola at Man City, are quite astonishing. Only Lionel Messi has a better goal contribution under Pep than Raheem Sterling.
He wants to play week in and week out; he believes he can add some more silverware to his cabinet by moving to Stamford Bridge. The Blues can expect a showpiece from the former Liverpool and Manchester City stalwart.
