Wayne Rooney has wasted no time in bringing in talent from his old club Derby County with DC United signing Ravel Morrison.

The Washington Post has reported that:

"The club finalized the signing of playmaker Ravel Morrison, a person with knowledge of the situation said.Morrison, a 29-year-old midfielder, signed with United through 2023 with an option for 2024, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced.D.C. used targeted allocation money to complete the signing, putting Morrison in the bracket just below the three designated player slots reserved for the team’s highest-paid players."

Morrison and Rooney Have History

Morrison is a former teammate of Rooney’s at Manchester United and the pair enjoyed a successful relationship at Derby County also.

Rooney knows how to get the best out of the maverick player and Morrison delivered, scoring four goals and making four assists in 35 appearances in the Championship last season.

It was the most appearances Morrison has made in a single season as the player has had a very journeyman-like career so far. He started his career at Manchester United but he only made appearances in the League Cup.

He signed for West Ham United in 2012 and enjoyed a successful loan spell at Birmingham City before returning to star for the Hammers. Morrison’s dribbling skills were emphatic for the London club and he was on form for the first half of the 2013/14 season, which included an unbelievable solo goal against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, he fell out of favour during the time of Sam Allardyce and was sent on loan to Queens Park Rangers and then Cardiff.

Then in 2015, he signed for Lazio but only made four appearances for the Italian side. He was loaned back to QPR before getting his first experience of playing across the pond in joining Mexican side Atlas also on loan. He made 25 appearances for the club scoring three goals.

This followed a permanent move to the Swedish side of Ostersund. Morrison again failed to deliver playing just six times. He returned to England with Sheffield United but played just once in the Premier League before joining Middlesbrough on loan.

He then moved to the Dutch side ADO Den Haag where he made just five appearances. He then came back to England with Derby County where he was reunited with Rooney and where he started to settle and enjoy his football.

Rooney is definitely the Morrison whisperer. Where great managers including Sir Alex Ferguson have failed to get the best out of him Rooney has succeeded.

The player’s CV does not look the best given he has moved about so much but you only need a quick search on YouTube to see how much talent he has.

DC United are struggling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in the MLS and Ravel Morrison would definitely add flair and skill to their midfield. The Washington side is also interested in Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard.

Rooney’s contact book may prove to be the turning point in recruiting players to help DC United move up the league.
