Juan Mata emerges as shock Leeds United target

Transfer windows provide a guarantee for shocks and surprises but former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata being linked with a move to Leeds United could be the pick of the bunch this summer.

This is what reports coming out of Spain, as per the Mirror, are suggesting, at least. Spanish outlet, AS, states that Leeds are among ‘several’ European clubs eyeing a move for the 34-year-old.

Mata left Old Trafford at the end of June upon the expiry of his contract, therefore spelling the end of an eight-year stint in the North-West.

The former Chelsea man made just two starts in the Premier League last season as he saw his opportunities to make an impression dwindle.

The same report goes on to affirm that Victor Orta has contacted Mata’s father and agent to explore the possibility of a switch to Elland Road.

Negotiations are in the preliminary stages and it is yet to be seen whether the player would be open to a move to Leeds – or if they’d welcome him – considering his links to their bitter rivals.
