Liverpool wasted no time in tying Joe Gomez down to the club long-term, with him signing a contract extension that sees him stay at Anfield until 2027; Jurgen Klopp was particularly impressed with the centre-back on his return to preseason training.

The Reds have now successfully gotten Mohamed Salah, James Milner, and Joe Gomez to sign new deals with the club, and all before the summer window closes and the new season kicks off. The plan seems to be working for Liverpool Football Club as everything goes off like clockwork at Anfield.

Liverpool Negotiated the Joe Gomez Deal Quickly

It took the Reds board about 24 hours to sort out Gomez’s contract extension. On Wednesday the club reported they are not ready to lose the Englishman and wanted to get him to sign a new deal that would help fend off potential buyers.

"Liverpool have taken a u-turn on another defender, this time being Joe Gomez, who has been linked with an exit ever since falling down the pecking order at Anfield. They now see tying him down to a new deal as a “summer priority”. It is not only to secure his services long-term but to also fend off clubs such as Villa and the Hammers. (Via: thetopflight.com)"

The news came as a bit of a shock as the injury-prone centre-back was pegged to leave for either Aston Villa or West Ham United during the summer. Due to his lack of game time and the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig last summer, it was thought that it was about time for him to move to another club, especially ahead of a World Cup season.

Thankfully, once manager Jurgen Klopp returned to the AXA Training Centre, it’s safe to say he was more than impressed with the defender and the quality he was showing on the training pitch.

The Reds boss had this to say about Joe Gomez:

"His best years are still to come. Joe is an outstanding talent. He is also an outstanding defender and an outstanding human being. He has so many qualities, I could talk about them all day.So knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a massive boost – one that everyone who loves Liverpool FC and cares about its present and future should be unbelievably happy about."

Liverpool Have Four Senior Centre-Backs

As mentioned by the manager, Gomez’s “best years are still to come”. He has loads of potential and has room to grow into one of England’s finest centre-halves. Klopp certainly rates him as England’s best CB at the moment, and when he is fit, it is easy to see why.

Klopp’s Reaction to Joe’s Training Days At Axa:

"In terms of right now, Joe is in phenomenal shape. We had a few weeks off and when I returned to AXA I saw him and my first thought was wow!Physically, he is in such a good place and now all he needs is a good pre-season and the rhythm that comes from this.Everything else is in place and I could not be happier that he will be staying with us for even longer. At 25, there is no rush for Joe Gomez to leave one of the best clubs in England and Europe, especially while the manager rates him so highly and names him one of the core members of the club, let alone the squad.

He is the Reds’ longest-serving player behind Jordan Henderson. He along with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and previously mentioned, Konate, will be the awesome foursome to take them into the challenge ahead which is: defending the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and retry for the Premier League and Champions League.
