Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to a deal with Manchester United to join the side this
summer, as per David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The Dane is set to sign a three-year deal with the Red Devils, pending the completion of medical
tests and the player signing the contract.
Christian Eriksen Has Always Been Linked With a Move to Old Trafford
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been linked to United numerous times
throughout his career and was more recently rumoured to have held talks with the club in
2020, before opting for a move to Italian giants Inter Milan.
He was then forced to depart the club prematurely following a cardiac arrest on the pitch
during Denmark’s Euro 2020 campaign, which saw the star fitted with an implantable
cardioverter-defibrillator and therefore unable to comply with Serie A regulations.
Eriksen’s Return to the English Premier League
A move to Brentford meant the playmaker was able to safely return to the pitch and
consequently, move back to England; Eriksen joined Thomas Frank’s team during the January
transfer window and played 11 games for the side throughout the second half of the Premier
League campaign and before finishing the season as a free agent.
The 30-year-old is set to become Erik ten Hag’s second signing since becoming manager in
Manchester, with 22-year-old Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia reportedly completing his
medical at Carrington today.
What He Brings to Erik Ten Hag
Eriksen has the potential to play a key role in ten Hag’s plans, especially given the lack of
experience in United’s first-team midfield options.
Juan Mata and Paul Pogba recently left the club following their contracts expiring and it’s evident that the squad needs a bit of creativity and magic in the midfield to get the club back to winning ways – an area which the playmaker can undoubtedly improve.
Having consistently competed at the top level across Europe, Eriksen can also act as a
mentor for the youthful squad players that are still finding their feet in first-team football.
Players like Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri and James Garner will be sure to improve
playing with and around Eriksen, the same way United’s young forwards would have relished
their opportunity to train alongside Cristiano Ronaldo last season.
