Romero’s time in Manchester
Romero joined Manchester United in 2015 alongside Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Radamel Falcao and played more than 60 games before being released in 2021. The Argentine international kept 38 clean sheets in 59 games, whilst conceding 26 goals.
He started the Europa League final in 2017, which the Red Devils managed to win by defeating Ajax while under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho; it is also the last time they won any major silverware.
Romero left the club after supposedly being “frozen out” by former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Argentine was dropped for the 2020 Europa League semi-final against Sevilla, which they went on to eventually lose.
His last appearance for the club came against FC Copenhagen in the quarter-finals of the 2020 Europa League. His failed move to Everton on transfer deadline day where his wife took to Instagram to voice her concerns.
The former World Cup finalist was forced to train alone after falling down the pecking order behind de Gea and Dean Henderson.
Despite this, a source close to the player told the Manchester Evening News that he still had a lot of love for the club and would ‘always comes back if offered the chance.
Does a move back to Manchester United make sense?
Manchester United have reportedly finalized a deal for Feyenoord full-back Tyrell Malacia and are looking to bring in Frenkie De Jong and Christian Eriksen from Barcelona and Brentford, respectively.
Dean Henderson’s imminent exit could open the door for Romero’s return to Old Trafford, with the deputy keeper role becoming open again. Tom Heaton is currently the only option behind De Gea, meaning Erik Ten Hag could use Romero to provide good and healthy competition.
Moreover, this deal could be sorted quickly and the club can move forward to get the other deals finalized.
