Arsenal step up Raphinha chase but where SHOULD he go?
By Joel Edkins
Speculation surrounding Leeds United forward Raphinha began long before the conclusion of the 2021/22 Premier League season and it looks set to continue long into the summer transfer window.
Barcelona were thought to be frontrunners for the Brazilian’s signature, but Arsenal accompanied by London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham are said to have joined the race.
The 25-year-old’s situation became more ambiguous after Leeds retained their status as a Premier League club in dramatic fashion on the final day.
Raphinha was pivotal in his side’s 2-1 win away to Brentford, drawing a foul for a penalty before dually converting and then supplying the corner which deflected into the path of Jack Harrison to send the visiting fans into raptures.
The performance, followed by images of Raphinha celebrating among the travelling supporters, furthered his status as a cult hero at a club where moments such as those are not forgotten.
In the event of Leeds’ relegation, a clause in his contract allowing for a transfer of £25m would have been activated. A similar notion applied to midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Such are the fine margins within the sport, their survival now puts the Lilywhites in a position of strength and able to demand what they deem sufficient for their two most prized assets.
Much has been made of WHO should buy Raphinha and interested parties aren’t hard to come by but WHERE’s best suited for him?
