Asensio Leaving Real Madrid: Manchester United and Arsenal Interested
By Tanish Menon
Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio could become the subject of a bidding war between several clubs this summer. The 26-year-old has just one year left on his contract and is yet to reach an agreement with the current Champions League holders.
Manchester United were said to be frontrunners for his signature but according to Mirror Sport, Arsenal have now joined Liverpool and AC Milan in the race.
Asensio has won 3 Champions League trophies and 3 La Liga titles during his time at Real Madrid but now looks to be on his way out after starting just 21 games this season.
He was touted to be Ronaldo’s replacement for the Spanish giants after he bagged double figures in his first two full seasons between 2016 and 2018.
However, he suffered a knee ligament injury in the summer of 2019 which ruled him out of action for a year. Since then, it has never really clicked for the Spanish winger at the Santiago Bernabeu although glimpses of his brilliance could be seen.
Asensio has scored 12 goals and provided 2 assists, taking his overall tally to 49 goals and 24 assists in 235 matches for the Los Blancos.

What’s Next for Marco Asensio?
Asensio would be a good signing for Manchester United should they be able to pull it off. The Spanish winger is capable of playing on the right-wing although the Red Devils are thought to be in talks with Brazilian winger, Antony from Ajax.
Furthermore, United would certainly benefit from having a player capable of playing in different positions, something the current players at the club lack.
A move to Old Trafford would mean guaranteed game time and reuniting with fellow ex-teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane.
A transfer to the Emirates is also on the cards and under Mikel Arteta, Asensio could be part of an exciting project. The Gunners have significantly improved investment on their squad and having just missed out on Champions League football would be motivated to improve on that next season.
With Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s future in doubt, Liverpool could also be tempted to make an offer for the 26-year-old. Having just signed Darwin Nunez for a hefty fee and with Jota and Diaz as competition, signing Asensio would be just what they need to bolster squad options.
It would be interesting to see how talks progress from here on. Whether any club would be willing to cough up €50million to take Asensio away from Real Madrid remains to be seen.
