Matt Targett is Newcastle United’s First Summer Signing
Matthew Targett, on Wednesday, completed his medical for his permanent switch from Aston Villa to Newcastle; the left-back joins the Tyneside outfit for a reported fee of £15m which should rise to £18m.
A six-month loan spell for Targett that helped Newcastle avoid relegation has been rewarded with a permanent switch to St. James’ Park. The soon-to-be Toon will sign a four-year deal, keeping him at the club until 2026.

During the winter transfer window and after the arrival of Steven Gerrard, it was the curtain call on Targett’s Aston Villa career. The new gaffer opted for another option at left-back and chose to sign Lucas Digne from Everton; he was expelled by Rafa Benitez and found a new home at Villa Park.
This gave Matt Targett the idea he needs to start looking for a new club, but he didn’t have to look too far thanks to his time at Newcastle being a successful one in its own right.
He aided them in securing Premier League survival by playing every single minute of football from the moment when he joined Eddie Howe’s squad. He played 16 games for Howie and had no goal contribution. However, he helped a poor defence stop leaking in goals for fun.

Aston Villa making their own moves
Gerrard and the Villa transfer committee have been busy on their side and have their hands full trying to get the squad to Stevie’s standard. They have also made a loan deal permanent in the shape of Brazillian Philippe Coutinho; he joined on a four-year deal from Barcelona for £17m.
The second new addition is Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara. The midfielder will join the club on a free transfer. So both clubs are showing some sensible decisions in the transfer market. Villa has two talented players for £17m while Newcastle has a proven Premier League left-back for £15m.
The Magpies will continue to be cautious in their summer dealings. they do not want to breach Financial Fair Play (FFP) and enjoy a steady but rewarding rebuild.
