Steven Bergwijn has made a public appeal to be allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur amid rumoured interest from Holland.

Upon his arrival from PSV in January of 2020, Steven Bergwijn’s pedigree across Europe was on a steady incline having won three consecutive Eredivisie titles by the age of 22.

Taking over the number 23 from departing Christian Eriksen, the Dutch international was signed in the hope of adding creativity in conjunction with his ability to play a range of positions across the frontline.

He notched an impressive 14 goals and 12 assists in 33 matches during the season prior to his move to North London but hasn’t been able to replicate this kind of output since.

The winger/striker has managed a meagre 7 goals and 5 assists in 60 appearances in the Premier League, albeit with the majority of his minutes coming in cameos off the bench.

This has led to what appears to be the start of a bitter parting of ways between player and club with the former making clear his stance on the matter of his future.

Bergwijn is currently away with the Dutch national team and was on the scoresheet in a convincing 4-1 victory away to Belgium on Friday.

Understandably buoyant with a return to form, Bergwijn spoke candidly to Dutch outlet AD post-match.

"“I just need to go play. I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure,” Bergwijn exclaimed.“Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there.“I want to go and play somewhere weekly. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. My situation now has to be different.”Via: Evening Standard"

What has gone wrong for Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham?

Success on the international stage, alike Christian Pulisic of USA and London rivals Chelsea, hasn’t been a problem for Bergwijn.

Under Louis van Gaal and Frank de Boer before him, the PSV academy product has always had a defined role; leading the attack partnered by Barcelona’s Memphis Depay.

The pair’s ability to make a mixture of runs both in behind and coming short creates confusion for opposition defences and in effect sees Bergwijn at his best.

Despite this, at club level with Tottenham, his versatility has proved somewhat counter-productive and managers Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito-Santo and now Antonio Conte have been divided in their assessment of his best position.

Bergwijn’s brief spell at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hasn’t been without glimpses of potential, however, with the most recent coming away to Leicester City.

With his side 2-1 down as the game headed into the 4th minute of added time, Bergwijn – a second-half substitute – scored two to flip the game on its head and send the travelling fans into raptures.

The latest reports surrounding Steven Bergwijn’s future point towards a return to his homeland with recently crowned champions Ajax. Transfer oracle Fabrizio Romano has stated Tottenham will be willing to part ways with Bergwijn for €30m.

A transfer appears the most sensible option for all parties at this point. Steven Bergwijn has three years remaining on his contract, allowing Daniel Levy to cash in and at 24, the player still has time on his side.
