How Might Todd Boehly’s Chelsea Look at the End of His First Transfer Window?
CF: Kai Havertz (Romelu Lukaku/Armando Broja)
Kai Havertz at center-forward just works best for this system. He can hold the ball up, link-up play well, and has a good finish on him.
Modern coaches are looking more and more like their system requires a center-forward differing from the conventional mold and after multiple experiments moving away from it, I’d be surprised if Tuchel now doesn’t confidently see Havertz as the main man here for the club.
There has been relentless speculation and noise about Romelu Lukaku and his desire to potentially return to Inter Milan. While fans had continued to support the Belgian despite an extremely ill-advised interview in the middle of last season, his failure to quash these rumors when asked at duty with his national team will have worked the last nerve of many a Chelsea fan.
Whether Inter – or any club for that matter – would put together the financials for Chelsea to sell Lukaku, remains to be seen.
In any case, Chelsea have another Cobham product returning from loan and ready to join the first-team squad. Armando Broja was very impressive in pre-season last year and showed glimpses of real talent to go alongside his work rate on loan at Southampton.
He’s got a big future ahead of him and if Lukaku should be allowed to leave, the natural step would be to keep Broja as the backup center-forward.
