AM: Mason Mount (Hakim Ziyech)

I resisted the urge to put Ousmane Dembele here. I think there’s a decent chance the Blues could pull off a deal for the out-of-contract Frenchman but it’s not advanced enough for me to suggest he’s a squad option here over Hakim Ziyech, for whom there’s no concrete talk on a move away either.

Mason Mount is growing from strength to strength with every passing season and his skillset means he can play on the right side of a front 3, he can play as a #10 in a 3-4-1-2 kind of shape that served Chelsea well at the back end of last season but also seamlessly help the team to morph into a 3 man central midfield off the ball when the situation demands it. A supremely talented player.

Hakim Ziyech’s Chelsea career just hasn’t gotten started but he does possess a wand of a left-foot and we’ve seen glimpses of his brilliance in his time at the club so far. Tuchel has trusted him in some big games and I foresee both player and manager wanting to give it another season to make it work.

AM: Timo Werner (Christian Pulisic)

This position requires pace and a direct goalscoring threat. Timo Werner excels at using his pace to stretch a defense allowing room for Mount and the center-forward to operate in, while Christian Pulisic is the better choice in games requiring an option to run at the defense.

Both players haven’t had the impact they would’ve ideally wanted at the club but are good fits for their roles and the club would do well to retain them.
