Newcastle United are reported to have agreed a deal with Stade de Reims for French striker Hugo Ekitike.

A lot has been made of Newcastle United’s proposed transfer business this summer, as the club enters their first full season with the backing of Saudi consortium PIF.

Eddie Howe has protested a need for fans to temper their expectations, however, amid concerns around Financial Fair Play.

Notwithstanding the limitations potentially put on the Magpies’ spending, a pragmatic approach to starting the new chapter is likely more towards Howe’s train of thought anyway.

That being said, and to the delight of the Toon Army, Newcastle are thought to be nearing the announcement of their first signing of the window.

Stade de Reims have reportedly accepted a €30m (£25.6m) offer for highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike, as per the Guardian.

The 19-year-old, who has been on Newcastle’s radar for months, has indicated a willingness to accept the terms, the same article goes on to state.

Who is Newcastle-bound Hugo Ekitike?

Hugo Ekitike is set for a big future and has attracted attention from across the continent with Borussia Dortmund among those Newcastle have supposedly beat out to secure his signature.

Since returning from a loan in Denmark in 2020/21, the France U20 international enjoyed a more prominent role with Reims in the 2021/22 campaign.

A goal involvement record of 10 goals and 3 assists in just 15 starts highlights the productivity of the forward who is blessed with a physique capable of adapting to the requirements of the Premier League, standing at 6ft-2in.

Newcastle were in advance talks to secure Ekitike’s signing in January but a deal fell through at the final minute.

Speaking to L’Équipe in the months following the failed transfer, the player explains it was a decision he made personally before leaving the door open to a move away from his boyhood club.

"“I have a lot of respect for that big club. But it was all happening very quickly, the timing wasn’t right. It was better to stay here, to play a full season, to establish myself,” Ekitike said.“It makes me smile because it gratifies my hard work. I get the impression that I exist. I know that what I’m doing on the pitch is good, it’s being recognised. And not just by anyone. It pushes me to give the best account of myself. I always want to progress and become the best.“I consider myself to be ready for anything. Whether that’s staying here or taking up a challenge that everyone agrees with.”Via: 90min.com"

Subject to confirmation, Newcastle fans can look forward to a presence up front, possessing excellent movement both in behind and in the penalty area.

The level of involvement upon arrival in St. James’ Park will be decided by a variety of factors including the speed in which he settles in, but also whether another striker is recruited.

Chris Wood and Callum Wilson are the two currently at Howe’s disposal but considering the former’s lack of output last season and Wilson’s injury record, other targets will no doubt be explored.

The hotly-tipped Darwin Nunez is an option and a signing of this scale would take the shine off Ekitike, therefore allowing him to develop with less pressure of providing an instant impact.
