Manchester United 21/22 Season: Old Boys Saved the Club From Further Embarrassment
By Varun Aithal
Phew!!! A terrible season finally ends for Manchester United. This is probably the exact reaction of every frustrated Manchester United fan that is glad to see the season end.
After finishing second in the Premier League and as runners-up in the Europa League in 2020/21, fans expected them to be genuine title contenders. The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane raised the fans’ hopes.
The team started their season on a great note with a 5-1 win over Leeds United. However, things quickly fell apart after the fourth gameweek. Following a poor run of games, the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and appointed Ralf Rangnick as an interim manager.
Under the interim manager, after picking a few wins, the form once again tapered down. The consistent injuries, the poor form of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Greenwood ending up in jail did not help them.
Manchester United found themselves out of the Champions League qualification race by the end of April. At the end of a laborious season, the Red Devils finished 6th in the Premier League standings and qualified for the Europa League 2022/23.
