Top 5 Argentine Players to have played in the Premier League
English football has been lit up by Argentine players since Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa turned out for Spurs in the old first division. Since the Premier League started we have seen many goals from the likes of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Agüero. We have also seen flops from Juan Sebastián Verón and Ángel Di María.
With Alejandro Garnaucho scoring twice as Manchester United won the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night, we may be about to see another Argentine star. But who are the top 5 Argentines in the Premier League era?
Premier League’s all-time top 5 Argentinians:
5. Manuel Lanzini
Lanzini ranks third on the all-time charts of Argentine top goalscorers in the Premier League with 26 goals. He also ranks 5th on the Argentine assists list with 17. The attacking midfielder has performed consistently at a top level for West Ham since he joined the club in 2015.
4. Pablo Zabaleta
With 303 appearances Zabaleta has played in the Premier League more than any other Argentine. He has also won the Premier League twice, once in the 2011/12 season and the other in the 2013/14 season. Impressively the full-back is also ranked 4th on the Argentine Premier League assists list with 21.
3. Javier Mascherano
He may not have won the Premier League with Liverpool but Mascherano was world class for Liverpool after he enjoyed a short spell at West Ham, making 99 appearances in total. Mascherano controlling the midfield allowed Steven Gerard to play a more attacking role which eventually earned the Argentine a move to Barcelona.
2. Carlos Tevez
Tevez scored 84 goals in the Premier League for West Ham United, Manchester United and Manchester City. He has scored important goals at both ends of the table, helping West Ham survive relegation in the 2006/07 season, winning the league with Manchester United in 2007/08, 2008/09 and with Manchester City in 2011/12.
1. Sergio Agüero
Agüero has scored the most out of all the Argentines with 184 goals in the top flight, which is also 4th on a list of players from all nations. He also has more assists than anyone else from Argentina with 47 and has won the league 5 times, which is also more than any other Argentine.
