Tottenham Hotspur defender, Matt Doherty, will miss the remainder of the season with a medial collateral ligament injury, that he picked up in the team’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa.
The Ireland International was able to walk off the pitch during his side’s win. It was a challenge with Villa player Matty Cash that is believed to have aggravated the injury.
Spur’s medical team believed it to be a minor injury, but scans later revealed the MCL injury, that could keep Doherty out for over 12 weeks.
It is a big blow for Antonio Conte, as the defender has become a regular in the Spur’s team, seemingly easing into Conte’s wing-back play. In his last five games, the player had scored two goals and amassed three assists, as Spurs overtook Arsenal to move into fourth place.
In better news for Tottenham fans, Sergio Reguilon, who looks most likely to be Doherty’s replacement in the team, played well against Villa, with the hope he can pick up form on the run-in.
Doherty will likely miss out on the Republic of Ireland’s Nation League’s games in June against Ukraine, Armenia and Scotland.
Tottenham face several teams who are fighting relegation in the coming week’s, but their biggest Premier League games come against Liverpool and Arsenal, in a North London Derby that could decide who gets the final UEFA Champions League place.
