Chelsea suffers another injury setback as we reach the latter stages of the 2021/22 campaign. Sadly Mason Mount is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks following an ankle injury sustained in the finals against Palmeiras.
Not the news all Chelsea fans wanted to hear after all the Club World Cup jubilation. Mason Mount could be missing for a crucial period in Chelsea’s Champions League defending run and could miss the Carabao Cup finale against Liverpool.
"Mason Mount is facing a race against time in his bid to be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at the end of the month. The Chelsea midfielder was forced off during the first half of the Club World Cup final on Saturday as the Blues were crowned champions after beating Palmeiras in extra time.It means he is certain to miss the Champions League last-16 first-leg clash with Lille, as well as the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace this weekend.(Via: the dailymail.co.uk)"
It happened as early as the 31st minute of the final against Brazilian outfit, Palmeiras. Mason Mount limped off the pitch and was replaced by Christian Pulisic.
Thankfully, his team was up to the challenge without their midfield talisman on the field and eventually won in extra time thanks to a Kai Havertz penalty.
How big is the hole in Chelsea’s midfield left by Mason Mount?
For now, it is a race against time to be fit for the final against the Reds happening on 27 February 2022. He has already been ruled out of the first leg in the Champions League Round of 16 clash against Lille, so it will be a great viewing to see how they fare without Mount for the second time this season.
We have been here before and the Blues have had to adapt to life without key players throughout the campaign — still enduring the loss left by Reece James and Ben Chilwell — two players who were at the forefront of Chelsea’s results this season.
The Englishman has been one of the first names on the teamsheet under Thomas Tuchel and is one of the Blues biggest goal threats this season with seven scored — third in the overall standings for Chelsea — behind only Jorginho (9 goals) and Romelu Lukaku (eight goals).
The London side has the personnel to keep them winning but it is a massive miss if Mason Mount doesn’t make the final of the Carabao Cup — a chance to take their third piece of silverware under Tuchel.
