Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott made his first appearance on the pitch, five months after suffering a horrific ankle injury against Leeds.

The midfielder made his Anfield return, coming on in 58th minute to a standing ovation, in an FA Cup tie against Cardiff City. Thing’s got better from there for the 18-year-old as he latched onto a Andrew Robertson cross, took one touch and volleyed it past the still Dillon Phillips in the Cardiff net. The emotion on Elliott’s face was matched by the sound coming from the Kop, as he celebrated ending his long rehab with a wonderful goal.

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, said as comebacks go, it was almost a fairy-tale for Elliott.

"“We were all shocked but he is a special kid. It took a while and the medical team did an incredible job and he was patient enough to do the necessary things.“Scoring a goal in front of The Kop makes it a fairy-tale. The 12 o’clock kick-off is maybe not the most emotional but when he came on it felt like eight o’clock on a European night with floodlights.“The crowd were there and celebrated it, it was nice.” (via BBC Sport)"

The youngster joined the Merseyside club in 2019, having spent his youth career at Fulham. After having a breakthrough on-loan at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, Elliott would come back and make a run in the first-team, before having it halted by his injury.

"“It is still hard to put into words at the moment,” He told ITV. “This is what I am in the team to do, score and assist and thankfully it came today in front of the fans after a long time out. It is my job but a moment myself and my family will remember.“The list goes on but one man most important is Joe Lewis, one of the physios. He took me in the early hours until late at night and got me strong again.“Big shout out to my family, friends, mum and dad who helped and supported me throughout. A massive thank you to everyone at LFC, including the fans.” (via BBC Sport)"

It is likely Klopp will want to ease his midfielder back into action, but no doubt Elliott will be raring to go when he is next called upon.
