Burnley believe they have got a more than adequate replacement for Chris Wood in the form of Wout Weghorst, with the 29-year-old joining from Wollfsburg.

The Dutch man stands 6ft 6 and goes with pretty much every philosophy expected at Burnley, he quite simply is a big bodied finisher, but this time one that also has UEFA Champions League experience.

The forward, who played in this summers Euro’s, moves to England after having his career really begin to take off over the last four years. After starting his career in the second division of Dutch football, Weghorst got his top tier break when he joined AZ Alkmaar in 2016. There he would 31 goals in 61 league appearances over two seasons.

This form obviously attracted suitors, including his next destination, Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. Since landing in Germany, the striker has scored at least 18 goals in every season in all competitions, scoring 25 last season as the club secured a top four place.

Even at 29, Weghorst still has a good way to go, but brings in some quality that the Clarets haven’t really had. He fits all the boxes of a Sean Dyche striker, good in the air, can finish with his head and feet and has impeccable  hold up play. What makes him different, is that he has done all this at the top level, a level higher than the Lancashire club are currently at.

The deal is said to have cost around £15 million, plus incentives should Weghorst hit the ground running. He will be available for their next Premier League game.
