Since the start of the new year, Newcastle United fans are over the moon. The reason behind their joy is their club’s activity in the transfer window. After signing Kieran Trippier and being linked mostly with Sven Botman, the Toon Army is now linked to signing Diego Carlos and Jesse Lingard this month.
According to reports: Newcastle United have enquired about the availability of Diego Carlos from Sevilla. At the same time, the Magpies face stiff competition from a Premier League rival to secure his services.
"Newcastle are competing with a second Premier League club to secure the signing of Brazilian defender Diego Carlos from Sevilla. The Magpies are understood to have made a £30m offer for Carlos which has now been matched by their Premier League rival.(Via: Sky Sports)"
The St James’ Park outfit is in talks with multiple defenders including Attila Szalai (Fenerbahce) and Sven Botman (Lille) to help solve their goal conceding issue at the back.
Eddie Howe wants to strengthen his defense as they have leaked the second-highest number of goals in the English top-flight; only Norwich City have a poorer defensive record compared to Newcastle.
In the ongoing season: the Sevilla central defender has featured in 28 games and has two goals to his name. In La Liga, Carlos has an impressive aerial defensive record with a success rate of 70.8%. Added to his aerial presence, he averages 1.3 tackle wins and 2 blocks per 90.
Manchester United reject Newcastle’s Lingard loan proposal
To improve their attacking output, journalists have linked the Magpies with several players across England and Europe. Amongst those, they are looking to secure the signing of Jesse Lingard with just six months remaining on his contract.
"Manchester United have rejected an approach from Newcastle United to take Jesse Lingard on loan. The 29-year-old has six months left on his contract and Eddie Howe is keen to make the forward his third signing as Newcastle’s manager(Via: Guardian)"
After a poor 2019/20 season, Jesse Lingard moved to West Ham United on a loan deal during January and successfully revived his career. Lingard contributed heavily to help West Ham United to finish in the top six last term.
He had an immediate impact in London with nine goals and four assists from 16 appearances in the second half of the 2020/21 season — he is the perfect player to help the Magpies fight for Premier League survival.
Sadly, their plans have been halted by Manchester United who have turned down their initial loan offer. However, Ralf Rangnick mentioned several times in the press conference that he will not stop any player from securing the move.
It will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old will secure the deal before the transfer window slams shut on January 31st.
