Burnley have found themselves in a predicament after losing their number nine, Chris Wood, to relegation rivals Newcastle United, after the Magpies activated his release clause. The Clarets, low on players and desperately in need of a forward, have begun looking at former £35 million striker Andy Carroll.
Former Liverpool and West Ham player Carroll, is currently plying his trade in the Championship, for Reading, after leaving his boyhood team, Newcastle, for a second time. So far the England International has scored one league goal in seven appearances, but did manage two wonder goals against Fulham, both were unfortunately disallowed.
Despite lacking goal scoring form, Carroll would appear to be the perfect fit for Burnley, at least in the short term. He fits Sean Dyche’s style, with his large frame and ability to latch on to overhead balls, he would slot seamlessly into the side.
Carroll is only on a short term deal with Reading, so would be available at a low cost and almost immediately. With the Lancashire clubs current situation, it could be the best fit.
Dyche’s men announced they had postponed their game against Leicester City, due to not having enough players to fulfil the fixture. It is understood this is down to a mixture of COVID related absences and injuries. The Premier League accepted the clubs request as they have less than 13 outfield players available.
Burnley will now have four games to play before the end of the season, that were postoned due to COVID.
The Clarets are in need of replacements bad, and Carroll could be a solid addition, wouldn’t solve all their problems, but is a safe option as they look to avoid the drop.
