According to Fabrizio Romano, the start of a new week spells decision time in regards to the future of unsettled Everton full-back Lucas Digne.

In a tweet, the transfer expert explained that “direct contacts will take place between Aston Villa and Everton to discuss a fee for a permanent move” with the player “understood to be attracted” by the opportunity.

News of unrest between Digne and Rafa Benítez began to surface last month after the Frenchman was seemingly outcast from his manager’s plans, not featuring since the 1st of December.

In the early stages of the January transfer window opening, Chelsea were tipped to make a move for the 28-year-old with Tuchel looking to fill the void left by the injured Ben Chilwell.

Interest from the West-London club appears to have cooled, potentially owing to Digne’s attributes being that of a traditional full-back rather than a wing-back’s, which the German manager’s system relies upon.

Lucas Digne, another step in the right direction for Villa?

Once a player becomes heavily linked with a club, as is the case with Digne and Villa, it is natural to assess the need for a player of the position in question.

The truth is Steven Gerrard already possesses a left-back of admirable quality in Matt Targett who has been a worthy servant to the club since signing from Southampton after Villa’s promotion back in 2019.

This is not to say an improvement can’t or shouldn’t be made and considering the obvious ambition the West-Midlands club are showing since Gerrard’s appointment, Digne, a France international, would certainly be looked upon as another step in the right direction.

Having already completed the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona and as rumours surface of interest in Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, I’d imagine any remaining upset at the departure of popular boss Dean Smith has likely dissipated.

To the delight of the Villa faithful, Gerrard looks to be using his reputation as pulling power in signing players that previously may have looked at the club as a potential step down.

The signing of Digne would offer Villa a threat going forward that their current options cannot, therefore helping Gerrard realise the ambitions of his new side becoming one that is capable of playing on the front foot.

In relation to his current employers, Benítez has already made the necessary arrangements for his departure, signing Ukrainian, Vitaliy Mykolenko, as a direct replacement.

Digne’s exit is inevitable and with Villa in pole position, we will be sure to keep you updated as soon as a decision is reached.
