Everton snap up the highly rated Nathan Patterson
Everton have acted quickly in this year’s January transfer window, making the highly rated Nathan Patterson, their first signing of the window.
Patterson, joins from Glasgow Rangers, in a deal worth just under £12 million, plus add-ons. The sought after defender was touted by many clubs, but the blue side of Merseyside was first to act, bringing in the Scottish International.
So who is the young defender?
The 20-year-old Glaswegian comes with bag’s of potential, playing on the right side of defence, it seems this is the Toffee’s pick to takeover from Club Captain Seamus Coleman when the time is right.
Patterson is a player with a lot of stature for his age, standing at 6ft 3, he is good in the air, and powerful in 50/50 duels. He has a tenacious side when defending, much like his International counterpart, Andy Robertson, but his real strengths lie going forward. Though predominantly a defender, the Scot has appeared at right-wing for both club and country.
He love’s to play the overlap, bagging one of his two goals for Rangers doing just that in the Europa League against Royal Antwerp. Patterson also seems to relish the big games, performing in Europe and even on his first appearance for his country, where he combined with John McGinn to score a crucial goal against Moldova.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing though, with player being banned for four games last year after breaching COVID rules. Some of his performances have also been described as ‘erratic’, but in the most case, Patterson has recovered his performances.
"He was the one being aggressive in the press,” Scotland captain and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson said of his team-mate after the Moldova game.“He was the one who made the goal, really. In the first 10 minutes he looked as though he was maybe a wee bit excited and erratic, but we managed to get hold of him at the goal and tell him to calm down. He did that and started to pick the passes.” (via BBC Sport)"
So Everton are getting a player who loves the big game, a good tackle, and marauding runs forward. He has tonnes of potential, but hasn’t played all that much due to being behind Ranger’s Captain James Tavernier, but could flourish should he make into the team.
