Tottenham ready to offload fullback following failed move
Tottenham are said to be ready to listen to offers for Matt Doherty, who could be shipped out of North London as soon as January already. The club will look to offload before they reload to kickoff the Antonio Conte era.
Matt Doherty joins Dele Alli on the exit list at Spurs. They are looking to do business during January and add a couple of new faces to the roster, however, before any business for incomings can take shape, the club must sell.
As per the Athletic: Conte and the club are in search of “attacking wing-back and a forward. For them to acquire the services of either, they must sell off the previously mentioned Spurs pair.
"Like many sides, Tottenham are looking to do business in January, but any incomings are likely to be determined by departures. Spurs are open to offers for a number of players, including Dele Alli & Matt Doherty.Tottenham are looking to sign an attacking right wing-back and a forward, but their ability to bring in the right players will be partially connected to which ones they can get rid of.Spurs would be interested in moving on Dele Alli and possibly Matt Doherty, and there are others they would listen to offers for."
Matt Doherty’s short and miserable spell at Tottenham
In 2020 Doherty’s made the switch from West Midlands to North London for an undisclosed fee reported to be around £15 million.
What was anticipated to be a brilliant move has turned out to be a failed one. Doherty has only been one season and a bit at Spurs but already the club has decided they’ve seen enough.
However, it must have been tough trying to cement a place during that short space of time and while playing under three different managers since he arrived.
The fullback has only contributed with two assists in his time at the club. He has played a low total of 33 games to date — six of the 33 games being this season.
His time at Tottenham has been far from anything like his spell at the Molineux. He was one of their main characters at Wolves in his nine seasons there. In his time he racked 294 appearances, scoring 27 goals and assisting a further28.
A move back to the Molineux certainly wouldn’t hurt anybody, but that ship could have sailed with them under new management and spoilt for choice in the fullback position.
