The blues for Chelsea who could lose Ben Chilwell for the season
Chelsea received some horrible news after their midweek match, as it was confirmed that star full-back, Ben Chilwell, could be out for up to nine months as he sustained an ACL injury in the UEFA Champions League clash with Juventus.
Blues boss, Thomas Tuchel, confirmed that Chilwell had sustained the injury, but stated it would take six weeks to work out whether the player needs surgery, and would be out for the season or not.
"Ben has a partial injury of his ACL and the decision is to treat it conservatively, and the next six weeks will tell the story actually if he makes it and if he will be fully available after the six weeks, or if he needs surgery after that.Right now I only care about the six weeks, we are very positive because the first redaction of his body is very positive.Hopefully it stays like this so now the full focus of everybody is on the next six weeks, to try to bring him back to play. Chilwell sustained the injury in a collision with Juventus midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, and went down clutching at his knee. Despite him having to leave the field, Chelsea would go on to win the game 4-0, although Tuchel admitted that the game was marred by the possible serious injury to the England international.
The injury opens the door for some players to get back into the starting XI. Spaniard Marcos Alonso was favoured at the start of the season before Chilwell became available again, or the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi can play the role, having impressed in spells this season.
Chelsea takes on Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend, in the Red Devils first league games since dismissing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Unfortunately for the Blues, they could also be without N’Golo Kante, who has a minor knee issue.
