Tottenham Hotspurs: 5 Ideal Transfer Targets for Conte in January
4) Joakim Maehle (Atalanta)
This is the point in this article where I start to get speculative, so bear with me. The success of Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses in Conte’s system at Chelsea, Hakimi at Inter and Conte’s decision to pursue Moses, Darmian and Ashley Young suggests that having depth and positional experience in wingbacks is important to the new Spurs boss.
Reguilon and Emerson Royal have the quality and skillset to suggest that they could succeed in his system however even Nuno’s reluctance to give Doherty a chance at right wingback and the currently stagnated career trajectory of Steven Sessegnon potentially as backup left wingback means specialist depth in these positions is key.
Enter Joakim Maehle. The 24-year-old Dane caught the attention of clubs across the globe with a terrific showing in a left-wingback role for Denmark at the delayed Euro 2020. Predominantly right-footed, Maehle has shown his versatility having played 12 games on the left and 4 games on the right in a wingback role so far this year.
His ability to play on both sides, experience playing in that role and ability to potentially even displace one of the two existing starters, make him a sensible and valuable option for Spurs this January.
