The FPL Gameweek 5 has recently been concluded and Gameweek 6 is already upon us due to a short turnaround.

There was a big surprise last week with Southampton grabbing a draw away against Manchester City, causing them to drop out of the top 4 and Brighton and Hove Albion join Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United in the European spots.

In this weekly article, I preview every match of the weekend and the players to target and avoid in those Gameweeks.

In Gameweek 6 the standout ties of the Gameweek are as follows:

Chelsea vs Man City

Man Utd vs Aston Villa

Brentford vs Liverpool

Arsenal vs Spurs

Player to target and avoid

Those who have been following this article of mine regularly have seen, I generally tend to avoid targeting players in tough games like these due to the unpredictability of the results, as they can be very tight or very open, depending on the tactics the manager uses – they are mostly different from the ones that they use for weaker opposition.

Player to Target: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has started his second Manchester United stint in good form, scoring 4 goals in his first 3 games, and is arguably unlucky not to have more due to Fabianski saves made in the West Ham game.

His next opponent, Aston Villa, have conceded 8 goals in the first 5 games, which is almost 2 goals conceded per 90 minutes of football.

Player to Avoid: Jadon Sancho

Sancho, Manchester United’s big-money signing this summer, has struggled to settle into the Premier League so far and has disappointed FPL wise.

There are now some concerns as to if he will be a starter for the Aston Villa game – this is also down to the impressive form of Jese Lingard and young Mason Greenwood. With him still being priced at a hefty 9.1m, he must be avoided until further notice.

Player to Target: Demarai Gray

Dominic Calvert Lewin and Richarlison were ruled out of the last game for Everton, which meant Demarai Gray played upfront with Salomón Rondón. This increases his appeal as an OOP (out of position) option and with 3 goals in his last 4 games – he is a player to target – especially at a measly price of 5.8m.

Player to Avoid: Brandon Williams

Brandon Williams is heavily transferred in due to him starting every fixture for Norwich and since making his loan move from Manchester United.

But Williams is part of a shaky Norwich City defense, which means he will most likely not keep a clean sheet in a lot of their outings. This means, he will hit a ceiling of 2 points in many EPL clashes and this is why I would avoid him.

Player to target: Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio is back from his suspension and will look to improve on his 4 goals and 4 assists in his first 4 games.

Antonio has been FPL’s second-highest scorer and the highest-scoring forward despite playing one game less than most. His underlying stats are one of the best in the league and he still cost less than 8.0m.

Players to Avoid: Luke Ayling

The Leeds United defense has been the second-worst in the EPL, conceding 12 goals from an xGC of 10.20 (expected goals conceded).

Adding to this, Luke Ayling is a big injury doubt for the Whites and even if he plays he will be playing as a center back. He will have next to no attacking threat, which is terrible value in FPL.

Player to target: Jamie Vardy

Many have doubted Jamie Vardy since the season kicked off and believe he is slowing down due to his age. However, the 34-year-old has started this season like every other – in red hot form – scoring 3 goals and assisting another. He has 4 goal contributions in his first 5 games.

Vardy has massively gone under the radar and is currently the game’s second-highest scoring forward and is owned by just 11% at the time of writing this. An amazing differential pick to consider.

Player to Avoid: Nick Pope

Nick Pope and Burnley have been below par and have been poor defensively, recording no clean-sheets in the first 5 games and conceding 9 goals during this time.

Pope has shown signs of regression over the last year and a half and I would be avoiding him as Leicester looks to be on a good goalscoring streak at the moment. They’ve scored in every top-flight match barring the Manchester City game.

Player to target Mohammed Salah

The FPL king of recent times, Mohamed Salah, is owned by only 57% of FPL managers and is the top-scoring player of the FPL competition to date.

Salah has only blanked once in the league and in that game, he was really unlucky to have his goal ruled out for a very marginal offside call. Salah has consistently delivered points for FPL managers and I would be worried if I didn’t have him for this game against Brentford.

Player to Avoid Kostas Tsimikas

Kostas Tsimikas, the 4.0m Liverpool fullback, started last weekend and has had 73555 transfers in this week.

What most people failed to notice was Tsimikas only played the game to give a rest to Andy Robertson, who is the first choice left-back. I would not be buying Tsimikas as he will probably not start this weekend unless Robertson gets injured.

Player to target and avoid

As mentioned in the Manchester City vs Chelsea preview further up, I would be avoiding targeting any players in this North London Derby.

Due to it being such a heated encounter in England’s top-flight and one in which the form of both the teams are up for discussion, I would avoid any players in this fixture and attempt to buy any of them if I didn’t own a Gunner or a Spur player.

Player to Target Ismaila Sarr

Ismaila Sarr is on everybody’s watchlist at the moment; he is the second most transferred in player this week.

Sarr scored an amazing brace against Norwich to earn a mammoth 15 point haul. He now faces a Newcastle defense who have allowed the most shots out of any team in the Premier League – a defense certainly worth targeting.

Player to Avoid Ben Foster

Similar to Tsimikas, Ben Foster played the game against Norwich City on the weekend and has attracted 43313 new owners ahead of Gameweek 6’s deadline.

Foster only played that game due to a late training injury to Daniel Bachman, who is the first-choice Hornets goalkeeper. I would not be surprised to see Foster drop back to the bench once Bachman is fit again, which should be this week.

Player to Target Adama Traore

Adama Traore almost got his first goal return against Brentford and looked really good – he had everything except for the end product.

He amassed 2 goal attempts and 8 penalty area touches. He also created one big chance and was very involved for the 90 minutes. I am confident he will improve his end product very soon.

Player to Avoid Marcal

Marcal was the most transferred in Wolves defender last week after a huge point hauling in the previous game against Watford. But his 2 assists in that game came from an xA of 0.0 (expected assist), which proves he collected 2 fantasy assists.

In the game against Brentford, he put in a below-average display and was eventually subbed off before the 90-minute mark.

His worst contribution during the loss was him conceding a penalty for the first goal against them. Many Wolves fans believe his place is under threat from young left-back Rayan Ait Nouri; this increases the possibility of him not making the starting XI this weekend.

Player to Target Neal Maupay

Neal Maupay and Brighton have both started the new season really well, improving on their struggles of last season. Whilst Brighton is ranked 4th in the league, it’s mainly due to their striker, Neal Maupay, and his goal contributions (goals in 4 games) that have propelled them into such a good position.

Maupay historically has been a reliable striker, scoring 10 goals in most of his time in the Premier League, but he had a dip last year and is now looking sharper than ever.

Player to Avoid Christian Benteke

In stark contrast to Neal Maupay, Christian Benteke hasn’t started the new season well. He is yet to register any goals and hasn’t looked great.

To add to Bentekes woes, the new Crystal Palace signing, Odsonne Edouard, has hit the ground running, scoring 2 goals in his 2 games. He hasn’t even played more than 35 minutes in total.

All of these factors combined make me think Odsonne Edouard will soon replace Christian Benteke as the main man for the Eagles and hence why I would avoid going for Benteke.
