It’s Liverpool and Manchester City’s turn to get their UEFA Champions League campaigns underway on Wednesday, as the Reds face AC Milan and the Cityzens take on RB Leipzig, respectively.
Liverpool looks to get back to their winning ways, having fallen out of the UCL to 13 times Champions Real Madrid in 2020/21, after two back-to-back finals, one resulting in the Merseyside team’s sixth UCL title.
In this year’s tournament, Liverpool faces a tough group that includes a team they’ve played twice in European finals, AC Milan. The group also includes Porto and Spanish Champions Atletico Madrid.
The Reds have a lot of the side that won the UCL two years ago and will be looking to get back to the final after a year off. Though their group is tough, they will be one of the front runners to win the group, as it is former nemesis Milan’s first time back in the competition since 2013/14.
Manchester City look to go one step further
Manchester City fell at the final hurdle in the UCL last season, losing 1-0 to fellow English team Chelsea. The Cityzens path will not be easy though, as their group contains some hard teams to get past.
City will have to take on French powerhouses Paris Saint Germain, fresh-off signing superstar, and four-time UCL winner, Lionel Messi. They will also have to take on Germans, RB Leipzig, and Belgium side Club Brugge.
The Manchester club believes they have found the key to success in the signing of £100 million man Jack Grealish and will hope he can lead them on the big step to European glory. Arguably, the game against PSG could be between the two best teams in Europe.
City will be hoping the experience gained from last year’s final can spur Pep Guardiola’s side to glory in this year’s UCL.
