What went wrong in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Young Boys that left all stunned?
The UEFA Champions League returned to the football world on Tuesday, September 14th and it has quickly gotten off to a chaotic start. The first two games of the Champions League season were Sevilla vs RB Salzburg and BSC Young Boys vs Manchester United.
The first game ended in just a 1-1 draw despite 4 penalties being awarded in the first half, three of them to Salzburg. Manchester United fans didn’t get the same first-half roller coaster ride, but their stomachs were turning by the end, nonetheless.
All of the energy shifted entirely in the 35th minute, though, when United’s right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, lost control of the ball and went in for a challenge that earned him a red card.
After all of the arguments were heard by the official, nothing was changed and Man United would have to see out the first half, and the rest of the match, not only a man down, but short a starting defender.
The red card earned both criticism and respect from tons of Twitter accounts all around the world, as people took to arguing their opinion on the call, on social media.
Many people made the argument that it would’ve only been a yellow in the Premier League, however, others mentioned that Wan-Bissaka could have seriously injured the opposing player and the red card was deserved.
Nonetheless, Manchester United had a tough task ahead of them: hold on to the lead with a man down for over 65 minutes.
From that moment on, BSC Young Boys were hungry for the win
From that moment on, Young Boys played like a pack of hyenas, just waiting for the right moment to pounce and take back the game. The Swiss team found that moment and capitalized in the 66th minute when midfielder Nicolas Ngamaleu notched their first goal of the game.
At that point, it became clear United’s best bet was to go for a draw, as it is obviously very difficult to score with a man down against a team that is giving you a tough time in the last 20 minutes or so.
Solskjaer with questionable substitutions
But the Red Devils boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, began making some questionable substitutions that only gave more of the game’s momentum to the hard-fighting Swiss club.
By the time that the game was reaching the 90th minute, it had been a miracle that United was able to keep the game level, clearly having lost their grip on the match.
The official signaled to give five added minutes for the remainder of the game, and that turned out to be exactly the amount of time that the home Boys needed to win the game.
In the 95th minute, with about 30 total seconds or so remaining in the game, USMNT striker Jordan Pefok read United’s sub Jesse Lingard’s sloppy back pass to De Gea beautifully and stole the ball to hit the game-winner.
Man United left shocked by Young Boys actions
Man United was left shocked while Young Boys had begun running to celebrate before Pefok even struck the ball. The UEFA Champions League never fails to entertain, whether you were happy or not with the result.
Manchester United will look to redeem themselves on the European stage in their next UCL group stage match on Wednesday 9/29 against Villarreal, with a league fixture taking place before that on September 19th vs West Ham United at the London Stadium.
