Eduardo Camavinga set to snub Manchester United and Chelsea
By Joel Edkins
The highly regarded French midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga, is set to complete a move to Real Madrid amid interest from a host of clubs that include Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 18-year-old wonderkid can now be considered a Los Blancos player as the final formalities are being completed as we speak.
Carlo Ancelotti has stated that Camavinga will remain in the Spanish capital and therefore in his plans, ruling out reports that he would be returning on loan to Rennes for the upcoming season.
As per French news outlet L’Equipe, Rennes accepted an initial bid of €40m from Real, which could rise to a figure in the region of €45m subject to add-ons.
All English Premier League
The news will come as a disappointment to fans of Manchester United and Chelsea who have both been heavily linked to a move for the exciting prospect that is Camavinga.
The Red Devil’s fans desire for a new defensive-minded central midfielder is well-known and Thomas Tuchel has been vocal in his wish to reinforce his options in the same area to his Premier League rivals.
What Camavinga brings to Los Blancos
Through this addition, Madrid have secured the signature of one of the most talked-about teenagers in world football, and one that is wise beyond his years.
Camavinga has made 88 senior appearances and was handed his full international debut at the age of 17, making him France’s youngest debutant since 1914.
Hailing originally from Angola, his playing attributes fits the criteria of a box-to-box midfielder; providing energy, natural tackling ability and unlikely composure for a player of his age.
In terms of the reasoning behind Camavinga choosing Madrid over the other clubs interested, it is likely due to the players he’ll be able to learn from. The legendary midfield of Modrić, Casemiro and Kroos all remain at the club and will provide their new teammate with an education in midfield-play that is unparalleled.
A change in transfer policy for Madrid?
Real Madrid and the entirety of La Liga are in somewhat of a rebuilding process; financial mismanagement and the loss of key assets resulting in the Spanish top-flight falling behind their counterparts in Europe.
Madrid’s financial crisis has been well-documented with reports circulating at the start of the calendar year, that their debt had surpassed €900m.
Such issues have forced those in charge at the club to offload a collection of their highest earners in order to relieve the strain on their accounts.
The four-time Champions League-winning partnership of Sergio Ramos and Raphaël Varane both said goodbye to the Santiago Bernabéu – much to the dismay of Madridistas.
The club are no doubt focusing on steadying the ship which rules out the free-spending policy their fans have come accustomed to, owing to a game plan that focuses on young talent that will rise in value and the signing of Camavinga certainly symbolises this shift.
