Premier League: Will it get better for Arsenal after two losses from two played?

The Gunners got downed 2-0 by Chelsea, failing to have a real impact on the game at all; Arsenal’s now on a run of two defeats in two Premier League games and for the first time in the club’s history, they have scored no goals and have collected no points from the opening two fixtures.

A packed Emirates Stadium suffered from the same grim outcome they’ve come accustomed to over recent years. A goal from Romelu Lukaku on his second debut for Chelsea in the 15th minute and a second goal from right-back Reece James 20 minutes after, was enough to see them collect all three points at the Emirates.

Arsenal were the second-best team all-round; they only registered six shots at goal while the visitors looked more threatening like they were playing comfortably at home and took 22 shots at goal.

The possession stats also show how Arteta’s men were spectators for most of the game – Chelsea owned 65% of the ball whereas Arsenal tried to keep the ball with 35% ball possession.

There is no need to go into the rest of the game’s stats as it will just prove more and more what’s being said about the North London side and how they never really posed a threat all game.

While the Gunners shoot themselves after suffering from yet another defeat, the Blues keep their 100% record intact and follow Brighton, Liverpool, and Spurs as the only teams to collect six points from the first six available to them.

The real question for Mikel Arteta now: Will it get any better from here on out?

Honestly… It can only get better for them. They have an EFL Cup match against West Brom coming up before they can make things right in the Premier League.

The Carabao Cup outing has become Arsenal’s most important game; a loss and they stay in the hole they’ve dug themselves into, a win for them and they can boost the team’s morale and confidence for their next run of league fixtures.

Arsenal’s next five matches

  • West Brom vs Arsenal (EFL Cup)
  • Manchester City vs Arsenal (EPL)
  • Arsenal vs Norwich (EPL)
  • Burnley vs Arsenal (EPL)
  • Arsenal vs Tottenham (EPL)

Sadly, what comes after the Hawthorns trip is not exactly favourable and will be a trip to the champions Manchester City, who just thumped the new boys Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad. Getting points here is not impossible but it will be the toughest ask of the Gunners.

However, it must be said, if they win this one they will be on such a high, we might not see them come back down – it will be the proper reboot and confidence build for a team in need of a surprise victory over one of the top sides.

If they fail to come up with the goods as they have in the past couple of league appearances, they have two MUST-WIN fixtures against a pair of clubs who have also lost both opening matches in their respective runs, Norwich City and Burnley.

Then comes the one that means the most to those in North London, the North London derby. A win here will be tricky with Nuno at the helm and Harry Kane back.

It’s a complicated call to make; losses against either of the Canaries or the Clarest and they can forget about a win in their heated rivalry clash against Spurs.

It will get better for the Gunners

There are three main reasons it will get better for them:

  • The permanent signing of Martin Ødegaard: In many ways, this is the standout factor. He provides the attacking edge the Gunners have been begging for since the opening day. Emile Smith Rowe needs the help and he is definitely going to get it, and this time it will be without any interruptions because Ødegaard is a true Gunner now.
  • The return of both, Gabriel Magalhães and Ben White: They need their main centre-back pairing working together. Once they get a good run of games under their belts, they could become one of the best CB sets in the league – but it is only going to happen over time – hopefully sooner rather than later for Arteta’s sake.
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was looking sharp: Despite the long list of negatives one can name in the game, there is one positive that stood out above the rest for Arsenal; it was the introduction of the captain and striker, Aubameyang. The speed and movement up top looked a lot better and quite threatening than it did when he wasn’t on the pitch. With his return plus the supply chain of ESM and MØ creating for him, the future looks much brighter for those in red in North London.

For now, no Gooner should look at the table standing as it is just depressing and will send them into a meltdown. But maybe time is all that is required following a bad run of injuries and setbacks during the build-up to the Premier League and during the initial two weeks of it.
