Chelsea’s Key Players

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is back. To the Premier League, to the club he supported and joined as a teenager back in 2011, to the country which mocked his touches and underappreciated his talent; fair to say, he will have a point to prove.

Chelsea made the Belgian its record signing by paying a financially stricken Inter Milan in the region of £97.5 million. Lukaku penned a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge and instantly became the club’s highest earner by some margin.

The Blues will have lofty expectations of the forward, whom many consider among the elite players in his category. And there is plenty of evidence to prove that:

Lukaku has scored 251 goals in 508 career appearances, 113 in 252 appearances in the Premier League, and 64 in 95 for Inter Milan that led them to their first Serie A title in a decade. Simply put, Lukaku guarantees goals. If there is one department Chelsea suffered in last season, it was goals. It’s a match made in heaven, isn’t it?

Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz entered Chelsea folklore when he rounded Ederson and scored into an unguarded net, the only goal which won the club its second Champions League title. The German, Chelsea’s big buy last summer, struggled at times during his first season at the club. There was a period of acclimatization to new surroundings, during which the youngster also suffered from the Covid-19 virus.

Havertz started to look more and more like his previous self once Thomas Tuchel took over Chelsea in January 2021. The German forward led the line for the Blues often during the business end of the season, put in some excellent rounded displays and scored some important goals, including the one which decided the Champions League final. For him, it’s now about pushing on and pushing further than before.
