Who’s a better fit for Arsenal: Tammy Abraham or Lautaro Martinez?
The Gunners have been very active this summer and most of the news from this transfer window has been around them. It is clear that Arsenal is in a very bad place right now since their performance has not been what they expected for the past few seasons.
Mikel Arteta is trying to do what he can in order to get Arsenal back to a top-four club again. For this, the Gunners would need a new striker who would pair up with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the striker position or possibly take over from him in the near and far future.
There are two names who have been on Arteta’s radar: Tammy Abraham and Lautaro Martinez.
Now, who fits better for Arsenal?
All English Premier League
First of all, Tammy Abraham already has Premier League experience, which is a big pro, and was doing pretty good at Chelsea before his injury.
Now, the Blues have given him the green light to leave the club and Arsenal is one of the front runners for the English striker.
Also, Lukaku was just signed for Chelsea, which would mean less playing time for Tammy Abraham at Stamford Bridge.
Is the Englishman better than Lautaro Martinez though? For me, the answer is just a simple no. Lautaro was a big help for Argentina this past Copa America where they were crowned champions after so many years of trying. Also, he’s a killer goalscorer who scores 12 plus goals a season and combined with Aubameyang, this could be a deadly duo.
Abraham just came from a difficult injury which made him lose his spot at Chelsea. That, plus the fact he has been ousted by manager Thomas Tuchel, he might never regain a starting place.
In my opinion, Abraham would not make a good partner for Aubameyang since they’re a similar type of player. Lautaro and Aubameyang would help each other and it could possibly be one of the best striker pairings in the Premier League.
Now, the reality of the situation
Lautaro could be way better than Tammy Abraham but there are a few things we need to consider. Firstly, Lukaku is heading to Chelsea, so it would be too difficult to sign Martinez in the same transfer window.
His price tag is going to increase and I don’t think Inter would sell their two main strikers who led them to a championship last season and ended a drought of 10 years. It would be great to see Lautaro in the Premier League but it would be difficult to see it happen this season.
Also, since Lukaku is a Blue, it would be easier for the Gunners to pursue Abraham because he would not be in Chelsea’s plans anymore and they would try to make some quick cash back after agreeing to pay £100 for the Belgian, which will make him a lot cheaper.
On Abraham’s side, he already has EPL experience and has played well in the Top Flight, but he still needs to prove himself that he can be the main striker of a top team. This would depend a lot on his injuries. Also, he’s not a better fit for Arsenal but the reality is that Abraham is way more affordable than Martinez.
Arteta needs to think about which striker would benefit him and the club, both economically and on the pitch. By signing Abraham, Arteta can focus on other areas that the Gunners need to strengthen.
