To say the Reds have had a withdrawn summer would be the perfect way to describe how quiet they’ve been during the transfer window – especially when new arrivals are concerned.

The only activity has been those exiting the club while acquiring the service of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, which was in the initial stages of the transfer window.

In fact, the former Premier League champions have made their intentions clear this window; it is to make sure they tie done all of their top talents to new long-term deals – hence Fabinho following Trent Alexander-Arnold as the first Liverpool players to receive a contract extension this summer.

After his surprise arrival on Merseyside side shores back in 2018 for £39 million from AS Monaco, being linked that whole summer with a move to Liverpool’s biggest rivals Manchester United, he became a permanent component in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI.

In his time at the Anfield club, he has played 86 Premier League games, starting 71 of the 86, and has racked up an impressive win rate under Jurgen Klopp. In his 86 features, Liverpool have won 60 games and have lost as few as 10 – the rest draws obviously.

As a defensive midfielder, his support to the backline is of far more importance to the attacking side of the game. He has a tackle success rate of 54%, has never received a red card and has been disciplined enough to only collect 18 yellow cards in his time in the EPL.

When he doesn’t feature in the midfield three for Liverpool, the struggles are as noticeable as daylight. Fabinho averages 2.88 tackles per 90 minutes, 1.90 interceptions per 90, 1.59 blocks per 90, has a tremendous 3.78 clearances per 90 and wins 1.99 aerial duels per 90.

These reasons plus the fact he has established himself as one of the main makeshift centre-backs in Europe is why Liverpool have rewarded him with a bumper new deal.
