England – Players to Watch

Even as a neutral (with a slight tilt towards Italy), it was horrifying to watch Bukayo Saka miss his spot-kick, take in what had just happened, and break down in the arms of his teammates.

The fact that the 19-year-old stepped up to take the spot-kick, however, speaks volumes of his character. It is that character which – in my opinion – can help him get back on his feet quickly.

The talent the teenager possesses is unquestionable; he is one of England’s brightest young stars. What he needs presently are some kind words, a helping hand around his shoulder, and the relentless backing of supporters.

Wounds such as these are difficult to heal. Just ask Southgate, who still carries with him the disappointment of all those years ago. England, collectively, has the responsibility to ensure that one of their youngest doesn’t go through the same.

Like Saka, Mason Mount is a youngster carrying the weight of the world on his burgeoning shoulders.

The midfielder is a unique talent – determined and creative, inexhaustible and inventive. Granted, he did not enjoy the best of games in the final, and his tournament as a whole was rather subdued.

Mount, however, has bounced back before: a Champions League winner’s medal alongside two FA Cup runners-up medals speaks of the same. He is the future, and indeed the present, of England.
